There seems to be a general confusion between Pilates techniques and Yoga. They are different in their body movement techniques and the results achieved yet also very complimentary in that they require concentration, discipline and a lightness of movement compared to most other forms of physical exercise in the pursuit of greater fitness.

A common misunderstanding is that Pilates is only an exercise method for women and is not considered in any way to be masculine. It was Joseph Pilates who was responsible for the development of the techniques and he was both a boxer and a gymnast and on that point the belief falls. The techniques are very adaptable and can vary in their intensity depending on the needs of the individual. In fact, it is its ability to modify the exercises for young and old, fit and unfit from beginner to advanced level that is one of the its greatest strengths.

It should be remembered that Pilates is not only undertaken for the toning of the abdominal muscles. Whilst it is used for this purpose, though the many methods concentrate on all body areas, what should not be ignored is that by toning the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles the body will benefit from both stability and freedom of motion. The techniques educate the body to move in harmony with itself thus alleviating the problems of muscles being worked for incorrect roles which the aforementioned problems.

By discovering how to do Pilates as part of a fitness and exercise program will increase the awareness of body movement, strengthen core muscles, improvement in flexibility and the adoption of correct posture. It should not be underestimated that once the techniques are part of a regular exercise routine, these habits will become subconscious. The benefits are enjoyed without even thinking about it.
